Pete Sharma at FundaUC

Pete Sharma, global ICT-CALL and EdTech expert for ELT, conducted a workshop organized by VenTESOL, sponsored by the British Council (BC), and hosted by FundaUC (University of Carabobo Foundation). This event took place last Wednesday, June 3 in FundaUC’s auditorium located in Mañongo, Valencia, Carabobo State.

Addressing the topic on The Use of Technology in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Pete Sharma explained the opportunities for synchronous and asynchronous use of Virtual Learning Environments, Wikis, and MOOCs, the enhancement of learning experiences possible with voting tools, podcasts, and presentation tools. Participants could also look into such resources for research as search engines, plagiarism detection services, and concordancers, most of which are freely available and cater to both teachers and students’ academic needs.

A very specific target audience of over 30 ELT professionals took the call to this unique event, was welcomed by Prof. Mary Allegra, acting Head of UC’s Phonology and Phonetics Chair, and joined by UC Prof. Emeritus, Jurate Kukanauza, BC personalities, along with VenTESOL Past Presidents Luisa Cristina Álvarez and Evelín Suij-Ojeda. Participants shared their positive impression of the activity and eagerness to integrate both the tools and their feasible pedagogical choices into their EAP endeavor.

Another occasion for professional networking and development in our community of practice, it was an engaging Wednesday afternoon when teachers lived, along with Pete, the VenTESOL experience of teachers helping teachers!!
